CHICO O'FARRILL (b. 1921). Afro-Cuban Jazz legend Chico O'Farrill recently returned from a long hiatus with feature articles about him in both Downbeat and Jazz Times, a Lincoln Center retrospective of his works, including the premiere of his Trumpet Fantasy performed by Wynton Marsalis, and a new album featuring his big band charts. Chico moved from his native Havana in the 1940s and wrote compositions and arrangements in various styles for Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Kenton, Machito, Charlie Parker and others from the late '40s to the mid '60s.
