Recording with the Jazz Messengers at age 17, the pianist has since proven his early promise and emerged as a major recording artist and composer. QUINTET/SEXTET INSTRUMENTATION Front Line: B-flat, E-flat, C treble clef, Vibes, C bass clef Rhythm Section: Piano, Bass, Drums, Guitar FULL SCORE Accra is in triple meter. This energetic arrangement features an effective use of a unison front line and a not-so-common 9/8 feel which turns into a 3/4 swing to really groove in triple meter. The head is not hard to play and it provides a good vehicle for working on intonation. There's also a great interlude that can set up a soloist. SOLOS: The solos feature some difficult changes but each chord gets at least a full bar so there's enough time to say something before moving on to the next change. He completed his jazz education as pianist with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Already an in-demand jazz veteran, Geoff recorded his first album as a leader (featuring several of his own compositions) when he was 17. He has recorded several albums as a leader and many more as a sideman with Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Farmer, Roy Hargrove and his mentor, James Williams, among others.
